Pouring Out Grace: Liturgy

How can we find abundance in Lent?

At the invitation of Young Clergy Women International, we have written a Sunday liturgy to accompany their 2026 Lenten devotional guide, Grace Poured Out: A Lenten Reflection on Water, Wine, and Oil. (Available here.) Grace Poured Out celebrates YCWI’s 20th anniversary and features daily devotions written by clergy women from around the world.

Inspired by YCWI’s logo, a stylized pitcher, the devotional writers focused on three liquids that are often poured out in scripture: water, wine, and oil. Each recurs across the Hebrew Bible and New Testament, evoking pivotal stories like the baptism of Jesus, the wine shared at the Last Supper, and the oil of anointing flowing over Aaron’s beard.

Beautiful though they are, these images of lavishness might seem at odds with Lent: why focus on symbols of abundance like water, wine, and oil during a season of repentance and fasting? This liturgy and YCWI’s devotional consider a variety of overflowing Lenten gifts and inspire new questions. How might these symbols ignite a desire for new life within us? Can water guide us to reflect on what we need? How can wine help us consider what comes between us and what we need? How does oil reveal the abundance that God offers, even in Lent?

Allow the vivid images of water, wine, oil, and pouring to spark creativity during worship this Lenten season with this liturgy, Pouring Out Grace.

The text of the image reads, “Pouring Out Grace: A Lenten Liturgy for Grace Poured Out.” Against the light blue background is a bright splash of water in a ring shape.
