Ready to start Lent planning? Who even ARE you?

A line from our Advent hymn, "God of the Starlight and Moon:"

In her Preachers’ Notes on the texts for December 11th, Emily Trubey-Weller reflects on Isaiah’s promise of a desert bursting into bloom and how this comes to life in and through John the Baptist…and in us. Even at the end of his life, as John questions his purpose, God sends a reminder of this promise unfolding: “John, in prison, sees nothing but dry sand, dust, and brown shrubs. He’s forgetting the other life that is there just beneath the surface and is just out of sight. He’s forgetting that though he has been part of God’s work in the world, God’s work went on before him and will go on after him. He needs a reminder from Jesus.”

In this week of Advent, we're thinking about one of Jesus' many-times-great-grandparents whose story is a hard one to tell: David and Bathsheba. Their story is fraught with so much brokenness. And yet David is called "a man after God's own heart," and Bathsheba becomes a political powerhouse, a woman to be reckoned with.

How many times have you, O Wise Worship Planner, turned to your hymnal’s section of Advent hymns, looking for something for your congregation to sing while the Advent candles are lit, and determined that it SHALL NOT BE the same thing as last year?
